POINT PLEASANT Etching by LIONEL BARRYMORE Reproduced in TALIO-CROME
When, in 1938, five old etchings bearing the signature of Lionel Barrymore were found in an old print shop, they were recognized as an exceptionally important discovery. Only intimate friends of the great actor knew that he had once aspired to fame as an artist. During a long acting career, the profession of his famous family, he achieved world-wide renown on stage, screen and over the air, but art was his relaxation. Though it was known that Mr. Barrymore had made several other plates, their whereabouts remained a mystery until 1952 when several more prints were found in an old trunk. So far as can be determined no more etchings by Lionel Barrymore will come to light because of wide demand for the earlier prints, Mr. Barrymore was persuaded to allow reproduction of those more recently discovered and chose the exclusive Talio-Crome process as the only medium to reproduce all the fine details of the originals.
"Point Pleasant", outstanding among the few plates by Mr. Barrymore, is characteristic of the quiet little seaport scenes he liked to portray. It may be framed to best advantage in a narrow natural or blond wood moulding with a black line.
